Our Journey

Top Gear Hobbies Muskoka was founded by Dale & Janet Cox in March of 2023. Dale's  love for RC vehicles began in his childhood, and as he aged he recognized a unique opportunity to bring the RC community closer together and make it more accessible to people in Muskoka and surrounding areas. After spending his early thirties racing and winning the All-Ontario RC championships, Dale’s passion for the hobby continued but he had to build his career in the nuclear industry as an NDT Technician. For many years, RC's remained a hobby, a thrilling escape from the demands of his professional life.

As Dale approaches retirement, the desire to return to the RC world became too strong to ignore. When the opportunity to own and operate this shop came along, he knew it was time to take the leap. Top Gear Hobbies Muskoka was born with the goal of not only bringing more RC enthusiasts to the North but also creating a space where people could explore, learn, and immerse themselves in this incredible hobby. While Janet may not share the same level of immersion in RC vehicles as Dale, her invaluable experience in banking and management has been key to ensuring the behind-the-scenes operations run smoothly. Together, they combine their passion, expertise, and dedication to offering the best possible experience for the local RC community.

Building a Strong Community

At Top Gear Hobbies, our mission goes beyond just providing top-quality products and expert services; we’re focused on fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. We are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from the Gravenhurst community, and we’re passionate about giving back.

We’ve been actively building strong partnerships with local schools and libraries, introducing students and families to the fun, creativity, and learning that the RC world brings. Through engaging programming, we’re helping to inspire the next generation of racers, builders, and RC enthusiasts. It's all about growing the community, promoting STEM learning, and fostering a space where everyone can discover the joy of hands-on exploration. Whether you're a parent hoping to inspire your child or an educator looking for innovative ways to engage your students, we're here to help make that happen.

This past March, we faced a temporary setback when a fire in the unit above ours caused us to close for a brief period. Thankfully, after only a few weeks, we were able to reopen at our new location at 405 Muskoka Rd. South, just 2 km down the road. The warmth and encouragement from the local community have been incredible, and we’re excited to continue our journey with a fresh new space and a renewed sense of purpose.

Meet Sean: Our Retail & Repair Specialist

Top Gear Hobbies wouldn’t be the same without Sean, our dedicated retail and repair specialist. You’ll often find Sean hard at work behind the counter, always ready to assist you with a smile and his trusty sidekick, Andy (the dog). Sean’s journey into the world of RC began in childhood when he spent hours building intricate Lego creations. As RC vehicles began to emerge on the scene in his teenage years, his fascination with them quickly grew, and his collection expanded.

By his late twenties, Sean was racing and servicing nitro vehicles, and his skills evolved further when he started working on small engines and dirt bikes, customizing them for optimal performance. With years of experience in customer service and repairs, Sean has become a go-to expert for all things RC. From boats and planes to helicopters, monster trucks, drones, and crawlers, Sean has the knowledge and expertise to ensure your RC vehicle is in top shape.

Sean's dedication to making sure your vehicle is the perfect fit for your needs is unparalleled. Whether it’s a simple fix or a custom modification, you can count on Sean’s expertise and attention to detail.

When he's not at Top Gear Hobbies, Sean enjoys spending time with his family, his dog Andy, and taking his 20+ vehicles out for some crawling and bashing fun.
